This is a very impressive ammonite fossil. It is a MONSTER Hoploscaphites nebrascensis from the Cretaceous of South Dakota. This type of ammonite has numerous ribs that are coarse in the beginning and becoming very fine near the living chamber. The keel is flat and narrow with HUNDREDS of prominent nodes on both sides. The ammonite is very 3-dimensionally preserved and exhibits very fine detail, and the cephalopod has the full living chamber present, which is extremely unusual. The iridescent ammolite nacre displays a wide variety of colors, mostly reds and pinks. The striking ammonite displays beautifully on a small block of concretionary matrix. And, remember, this ammonite is almost a half a foot across! This is an extremely large, extremely colorful example of Hoploscaphites from the Badlands of South Dakota.
